Why I love Microsoft. BizSpark Program.

November 27th, 2010

When you’re working on a web app, you end up with a lot of expenses you may not have anticipated.

  • Servers
  • Software
  • Time (time you could be using making real money)
  • Coffee

Software is the big kicker. It’s important that all of our software works perfectly, so we want our company to be built on 100% legitimate software. The problem is, software can be insanely expensive, especially Microsoft software.

Enter Microsoft BizSpark. If you are

  • Developing software
  • Privately held
  • Less than 3 years old
  • Making less than $1M annually

You can get all of Microsoft’s office’s software for free. The only software you don’t get is the Microsoft software that works on Apple computers. Regardless, it’s an insane deal.

Is this out of self interest? Probably. Startups companies often become big companies. Think Yahoo, Google, Yelp, and many others. If they don’t use Microsoft software when they’re small, it’s likely they won’t use Microsoft software when they’re big.  Moreover, entrepreneurs often start multipe companies over the course of their lives. You want these people bringing Microsoft software to their new ventures. It makes a lot of sense.

But, do their reasons matter to me? Nope. Thank you Microsoft.

Posterous and AirBnB T-Shirts

November 8th, 2010

AirBnB and Posterous make swag that people want to wear. It doesn’t surprise me that they also make products that people want to use.
